US lip cosmetics sales up 9%

US sales of lip cosmetics grew by almost 9% between 2012 and 2014, according to research from market analyst firm Mintel.

This compares to a 2% decline in sales between 2011 and 2013. Sales are predicted to reach US$1.4billion (£849million) by the end of this year.

While lip cosmetics remains the smallest colour cosmetics segment in the American market, it is currently growing faster than sectors such as facial cosmetics, which is increasing by 6.4%, and eye makeup – expanding by 4.2%.

The vast majority of US women, 87%, report that they use lip cosmetics, with lip balm more popular with younger consumers, aged 18-24, and lipstick the favourite with women over 65.

A current lip cosmetics trend is for strong colours, particularly in the younger age groups. 32% of women between 18 and 24 said they look for bold lip hues, compared to less than 20% of those aged 25 and over.

Key priorities when purchasing lip cosmetics is that products are moisturising, long-lasting, and softening, with 67%, 61% and 48% respectively naming these as key factors.

Sharon Romanowski, beauty and personal care analyst at Mintel, said: “The addition of skincare benefits including moisturising and softening (qualities) provide added function.”
