How to remove and correct bad SPMU work safely

Published 11th Feb 2025

When a client comes to you unhappy with their previous SPMU work, knowing how to assess, remove, and correct pigment safely is essential. Nez Hasan explains how to approach the process like a pro.

If a client is unhappy with another brow artist’s work, it's usually due to pigment discolouration or poor shaping. Here’s how to handle these cases effectively.

What to do when a client is unhappy with previous SPMU work

The first step is to have a thorough consultation with the client. Find out what concerns them most and what results they are looking for. This helps in determining the best corrective approach.

The importance of pigment removal before correction

It’s always best to lighten the pigment before going over it. I recommend at least three sessions of my pigment wiper treatment (or pigment wiper red line for pink hues). This prevents the need to go bigger to cover old tattoos and ensures a clean canvas for correction.

Start with a few sessions and assess the results. If the pigment is still too dark, additional sessions may be needed.

When to use microblading vs. microshading for SPMU corrections

  • If the pigment has faded to a natural shade, microblading is usually enough.
  • If the previous pigment is still visible and needs coverage, microshading is the better option.

For deep, dark pigments, complete removal is often necessary before correction. Attempting to cover them can cause long-term blending issues and compromise your reputation as an SPMU artist.

How to manage client expectations during the correction process

Some clients may be anxious about SPMU after a previous bad experience. Show them examples of fully healed work to build trust.

A good approach is to go lighter during the first session and assess retention at the top-up appointment. This allows for adjustments based on how the pigment settles.

Clients should also be educated on the importance of choosing a skilled artist; healed results matter as much as fresh work.

Why proper tools and education matter in SPMU corrections

High-quality pigments, precision tools and a clean workspace are non-negotiable. As an artist, continuous learning and refining techniques are essential for mastering SPMU corrections.

It’s also important to balance client requests with professional judgment. Not all requests are achievable or advisable.
