Tattoo removal for all skin tones

Published 13th Nov 2023

With around one in five Brits having at least one tattoo, it’s perhaps unsurprising to learn that nearly a third of those have tattoo regret. Although we think of tattoos as permanent body modifications, technology such as laser tattoo removal has been popular since the 90s and is an effective way to remove unwanted ink.

However, laser tattoo removal isn’t a magic fix for everyone. Most commercially available lasers are Nd: YAG (operating at 1064 nm / 532 nm), meaning that they effectively remove darker pigments (black or dark blue ink).

For colourful tattoos, this requires another machine that will remove stubborn ink (a Q-switched alexandrite laser, operating at 755 nm) and more sessions at a greater financial - and painful - cost to the client.

Client skin colour should also be considered, as laser tattoo removal is always not a one-size-fits-all quick fix.

Did you know that lasers don’t work in the same way on all skin tones and types?

Light skin tones

For individuals with fair or light skin, laser tattoo removal typically yields quicker and more predictable results. The contrast between the tattoo ink and the skin colour makes it easier for the laser to focus on the tattoo, minimising the risk of pigment changes or scarring.

Medium skin tones

Those with medium to olive-toned skin may require extra care during the process. The challenge here is ensuring that the laser selectively targets the ink without affecting the surrounding skin.

Dark skin tones

Dark skin tones bring their own unique considerations into play. Because of the higher melanin content, there is an increased risk of hypopigmentation (lightening) or hyperpigmentation (darkening) of the skin following laser tattoo removal. However, this does not mean that individuals with dark skin can't remove tattoos successfully.

Mixed technology lasers - such as the Q Plus C from Quanta Systems - simultaneously utilise Nd: YAG and alexandrite laser wavelengths, to target even the toughest of tattoos efficiently and effectively.

Its versatility in accommodating a broad range of skin tones and ink colours sets the Quanta Q Plus C laser apart. By utilising multiple wavelengths and customisable settings, it can effectively target the full spectrum of ink pigments, making it a reliable solution for complete tattoo removal across all skin types and ink shades. Whether your skin is fair or dark, and your tattoo ink is black, vibrant, or intricate, the Quanta Q Plus C laser system offers a safe and highly effective means to achieve a clean slate while preserving the natural health and beauty of your skin.
