What is ‘aura’ and how can you incorporate the trend into your business?

Updated on 05th Feb 2025

The word aura has been trending on the internet for a while, and the idea is moving into the wellbeing and beauty sectors, aura readings, photography and cleansing are being incorporated into all sorts of spaces.

With Pinterest predicting Aura Beauty to be one of the top trends of 2025, understanding how you can jump on the topic could be of utmost importance.

How can aura be incorporated into your business?

Hyper-personalisation continues to be popular in salon and spa spaces and reading a client’s aura before their massage could potentially help a therapist indicate focus points for massage or personalise a treatment space with aromatherapy or product choices.

Leeds business We Are Wellness is wellbeing and fitness centre that offers massage and meditation practices, as well as massage training. The Deep Healing Energy Cleanse treatment includes an aura cleanse, customised massage and energy sweeping to clear emotional blockages before a rejuvenating massage.

Rudding Park Hotel’s spa in Harrogate offers a range of energy healing and aura cleansing treatments with resident expert, Michele Leathley, including a bespoke energy healing session that incorporates elements of Reiki, crystal healthing, aura cleansing and Chakra balancing.

Sound baths can also be added to a treatment offering or attached to existing treatments.

Aura in a less conceptual, more literal sense, is also being incorporated into nails and beauty and could be personalised to match a client’s aura reading.

The technique creates a blurred-light effect, hence the aura description.

What is the definition of ‘aura’?

‘Aura’ in the Oxford dictionary is described as: the distinctive atmosphere or quality that seems to surround and be generated by a person, thing, or place, OR a supposed emanation surrounding the body of a living creature and regarded as an essential part of the individual.

The idea of a spiritual aura has roots in Indian culture, and history of similar concepts can be found in Egypt, China and Japan.

The concept of a human electromagnetic field was popularised in the UK by Charles Webster Leadbeater, a former priest of the Church of England and a member of the mystic Theosophical Society.

Generation Z and Generation Alpha have been using the word to describe the effect that someone’s actions might take on their individual energy. For example, doing something embarrassing being ‘negative aura’. Although this isn’t grammatically correct, language is ever evolving…

Many believe that a reading of someone’s aura can help to understand their personality, and even offer insight into their physical and mental health, which could help therapists to personalise treatments.

What is an aura reading?

An aura reading can be undertaken in many forms.

Some people claim to be experts able to see someone’s aura just by looking at them and there are also aura cameras that allege to capture someone’s aura, so it can be looked at by an untrained eye.

The colours in an individual’s aura can supposedly indicate parts of their spirit and sometimes be an indicator of challenges or poor health.

The meanings are blurred between practices and can be interpreted differently, but generally mean something similar to the following:

  • Red – indicates passion and anger
  • Orange – indicates leadership and creativity
  • Yellow – indicates friendliness and optimism
  • Green – indicates healing and a grounding in nature
  • Blue – indicates a strong intuition and balanced nature
  • Indigo – indicates spirituality and empathy
  • Purple – indications inspiration and imagination
  • Black – indicates negative emotions and challenges, even ill health
  • White – indicates purity and innocence

The aura reading is often interpreted by an expert, even if an image is taken, to best describe how a person’s aura is reflective of them.

Some of the editorial team had aura pictures taken at Salon Beauty/Salon International last October, and we think they’re pretty cool.

What is aura cleansing?

Aura cleansing removes unwanted negativities from an individual’s electromagnetic field.

This can be undertaken by a professional, using holistic therapies like sound baths, assisted meditation and massage, or can be addressed by the client themselves.

The concept of an Elemental Cleanse can be used by businesses and individuals, breaking down how to cleanse an aura into 4-6 categories: Earth, Fire, Water, Air, Spirit, and Sound.

  • Earth can include grounding techniques and crystal therapies.
  • Fire uses smoke to lift away negative energy - carefully observed candles in your workspace can be used to help cleanse the space.
  • Water is not only effective at washing away physical impurities, but also cleansing a client’s aura.
  • Fresh air is also considered cleansing, so having outdoor spaces in a salon or spa environment can be spiritually purifying.
  • Meditation and other similar practices are representative of the spirit cleansing the aura.
  • Sound vibrations can lift bad energy away and assist in resetting the body’s nervous system.
