Austrian spa-style medical institution Lanserhof is opening its first medical gym in London on May 2, 2019.

Set within private members’ venue The Arts Club on Dover Street, the urban health centre will be “the UK’s first medical gym” in which members will undergo a series of functional diagnostic tests upon joining, including an MRI scan, to create an accurate body-composition analysis.

This set-up is designed to give a clear picture of clients’ health and fitness, including joint function and muscle balance, allowing the in-house medical team to create bespoke training programmes that will enhance the individual’s mobility and agreed goals.

“At the helm will be medical director Dr Sebastian Kunz, a specialist in orthopaedics and trauma surgery, and he’s got the kind of care experience you would see in Premier League football. He is very much on the injury-prevention side, which is a big part of Lanserhof’s ethos,” said Sheila McCann, UK general manager for Lanserhof UK, exclusively to Professional Beauty.

There will also be an optional butler service, where they can reserve lockers, prepare clean gym clothing before workouts and launder the client’s belongings post-session. A nutritional concept is also being crafted to enhance health and fitness results for members.

The space will also feature new gym equipment from Italian brand Technogym, aligning with the group’s more medical approach. “Say your knee is weak but only when it’s bending at a 30-degree angle, the machinery has artificial intelligence built in it to read the client’s ability to apply varying pressures, adapting itself accordingly,” McCann told Professional Beauty. “The in-house doctors are then able to set specific programmes based on the client’s needs.”

This smaller, more accessible site, is a new route for the group. Lanserhof does have an existing medical day spa, Lans Medicum, in Hamburg, but its core offering is larger resorts.

McCann added that this more accessible, non-residential model presents a huge opportunity. “What you’re now seeing is the ability for Lanserhof to look after a growing UK population of guests who visit the resorts in Germany and Austria but can now ‘top up’ in London between their annual resort visit,” she said.

Memberships are available by application and pricing is available on request.

Lanserhof has also bought renowned destination Grayshott Spa in a bid to increase its medical wellness presence in the UK.
