Microblading vs semi-permanent make-up – the differences

Microblading and semi-permanent make-up are two of the most popular advanced routes to achieving that perfect brow, but how do you know which technique is best suited to your clientele?

In our exclusive video, Karen Betts, director of Nouveau Beauty Group and founder of permanent make-up brand KB Pro, explains how each technique works, the results achieved with each and how the training needs compare:

1. What are the differences between the techniques?

“One is working with a digital machine and the other with a hand tool – microblading is the hand tool and semi-permanent is the digital machine,” explains Betts.

2. Which looks can be achieve with each technique?

“Lots of different looks, whatever is on trend. We actually create a realism eyebrow with a really fine detail with the microblade, but you can also create this with a fine needle on the digital machine. We can also create an ombre effect with a digital machine – so ombre, fusion looks and more of a sculptured look,” explains Betts.

3. How long does microblading last?

“For the longevity of the results we do say 12 to 18 months,” says Betts. “The more pigment you impact in that area, the longer it will stay. I would say that when you’re implanting really fine detail strokes, they will fade a little bit quicker than if you’re doing shaded or thicker strokes.”

4. How does the training compare?

“Semi-permanent make-up is a longer course,” says Betts. “Even a lot of the companies that have been out there for a long time, a lot of my competitors who are friends, they are doing a lot longer courses – five-day or even seven day courses.

“The education is a lot stronger in the permanent courses than what it would be on a two-day course in microblading.”
