Yoga is the most popular type of wellness retreat in the UK
Yoga is the most popular type of wellness retreat in the UK, as health retreats become the trips to book this year over classic holiday destinations due to the pandemic.
Online searches in yoga-based UK retreats soared 890% from January to April 2020, found research from motorhome rental company Camptoo, while searches for “meditation retreats” also jumped notably last year, the report found.
Many are reporting a boom in the wellness industry so far this year, following the relaxation of coronavirus lockdown restrictions.
Interest in “activity camps” close to home also rose 928% last year and the search volume for “wellness retreats” soared by 81% from 2019–2020, the report found. This ties in with the steady interest in wellness retreats in general, with online searches for the term rising by 1,605% since 2015.
Meanwhile, there has also been a huge spike in online searches for “camping retreats”, “hiking” and “biking” too as UK consumers look for retreats based around outdoor activities.
“The industry was booming prior to lockdown last year and despite being locked away, we can see that that enthusiasm has not dropped, and with everyone desperate to get out of their homes, it’s the perfect time to get out and explore the great British outdoors,” said Ed Bassett, Camptoo’s head of wanderlust.
“Activity-based holidays are among the fastest-growing in the industry, and there’s never been a more exciting time to be involved. The benefits of a wellness retreat are endless, but we really believe that adding something activity-based in the UK – whether it be kayaking, hiking, surfing, wild swimming, climbing or mountain biking – will take that experience to the next level.”
